Although it is no longer common in the West, in ancient times many Astrologers had a working knowledge of palmistry. An understanding of how the planets are expressed in the hands adds considerable psychological depth and insight into the psyche.

The hands offer two readily available maps which reveal how the natal horoscope is expressed in real life.
The lines on the palm also offer a way to validate the meaning and timing of transits.

Astro-palmistry: In this workshop, Peter will describe the connection between Astrology and palmistry, and how the remarkable insights drawn from palmistry can be integrated into modern astrological consultations.
If time allows, we will look at some hands from workshop participants for teaching purposes.

Peter’s background: Peter Burns has studied and taught contemporary and ancient Astrology and palmistry since 1989, and lectured at the West Australian, NSW and Victorian Associations, the Federation of Australian Astrologers (FAA) International Astrology Conferences, SOTA in New York and CAAE in Toronto. He is presenting at the San Francisco Astrological Society on April 26 and 28, and the Sacramento NCGR Chapter on May 20.

Peter was FAA vice-president and VAA president 2006-2008. He has been national editor of the FAA Journal since 2000. Peter is a member of ISAR, AFAN, the Australian Professional Astrologers Association and the FAA. Peter Burns now runs online distance education correspondence courses and does consultations.

The irony is that although the general public associates astrology with the ‘the stars’ most astrologers only use the planets.

Many astrologers associate the meaning of fixed stars with disaster and destruction and view their use as fatalistic. However further study reveals a surprising depth of spiritual understanding which underpins this ancient knowledge. The incorporation of fixed stars into the modern astrologer’s toolkit requires subtlety and appropriate use within the context of meaning provided by the natal horoscope.

In this lecture Peter will explore some of the mystery that lies behind the awesome power contained within the fixed stars. In particular he will explore the meaning ‘Royal Stars’ and discuss how to use and interpret the fixed stars in the natal horoscope.

The planet which rules communication, messages, and exchanges of all types rules is Mercury. Those who study astrology know that since ancient times Mercury, the winged messenger, has had rulership over all types of communication.

In previous eras Mercury ruled letters, the postal services, calculators (Mercury is the planet which governs reasoning), telegrams, telephony and writing. The modern equivalents include computers, mobile phones, web sites, email, digital messaging of all sorts, social media and the internet.

Because of Mercury’s rulership over communication exchange and messages is very clear it would take a very powerful argument to displace Mercury as the ruler of the internet.

Uranus
Some propose that Uranus, is the planet of rebellion, independence, shock, surprises, chaos and terror, should rule the internet. However the descriptions offered for Uranus are more suggestive of  internet malfunction. 

Some astrologers suggest that Uranus should rule the internet because they have given Uranus rulership over Aquarius, displacing Saturn, the planet of science and organised structure, and for some reason Aquarius is associated with the internet. I have not seen the reason for Saturn’s displacement fully explained.

Glyphs and visible light

In the modern world the glyphs that we use to represent the planets are shown in equal size on paper and on the computer monitor. However Mercury’s light is clearly visible from Earth whereas the light of Uranus is normally only visible through a telescope. The question of light and its visibility goes to the very heart of astrology. Visibility = power. Mercury is much more qualified than Uranus to be ruler of the internet. Unfortunately it is difficult to represent its superior visibility on paper or on our present computer monitors.

Experienced astrologers who have completed my horary astrology correspondence course are amazed at the deeper insights and accurate predictions obtained when the ancient rulerships are maintained.

The 3^rd house

In a horary question such as: Will my new web site be successful? we use the ruler of the 3^rd house to show the web site. Its essential and accidental dignities and aspects with other planets describe its potential for success. The second option, depending on the layout of the horoscope, is to use the natural ruler of web sites: Mercury.

The clear and well defined function of Mercury gives it rulership over the internet.

By the way astrologers refer to the Sun and Pluto as planets. The word ‘planet’ comes from the Greek and means a moving point of light. Astrologers maintain the use of the word ‘planet’ in its original sense and use it to refer to the cosmic bodies in our solar system which include the 2 lights: the Sun and the Moon.

And astrologers also refer to Pluto as a planet: we are not beholden to the decisions of astronomers who have reclassified Pluto as a ‘dwarf planet’.

A definition of power would include the following: The ability to act with vigour and effectiveness; to act with strength and authority; the capacity to influence and motivate for good or ill; the ability to draw on strength and energy to bring about a desired result; to move with a surge of energy.

Yes each planet has its own unique characteristics which can describe a special type of power. However there is one cosmic body which uniquely reflects the definition of power described above.

It’s not Mercury – amongst other attributes Mercury is associated with communication, transport, messages, wit and exchange, but not power itself. Those who study astrology will know that Venus is associated with love, beauty, pleasure, comfort……. but not power itself.

 The Sun is the body which powers the solar system. It provides us with light and life. No other planet or cosmic body compares with the power might and majesty of the Sun. From a scientific point of view it powers the solar system and is the source of all life on Earth.

To ancient peoples it has represented truth power and everlasting love. From a religious point of view it represented God. In mundane matters it represents royalty. In horary astrology we use the Sun to represent kings, the eagle, the lion, and whatever is at the top of the hierarchy. By transit the Sun empowers.

The Sun is the planet of power, vigour, royalty, authority and vital life giving energy. It outshines and burns any planet comes too close. The Sun, of all the planets, represents power itself.

In the natal horoscope the Sun incorporates a spark of divinity which places humankind at the threshold between heaven and earth, perfection and corruption, the spiritual and the mundane.

How the power of the Sun is expressed in your personal horoscope is shown by the sign in which it is placed, its essential and accidental dignities, and its relationship with the other planets. No two horoscopes are identical and each person has a reflects a unique expression of the power of the Sun.

Currently her natal Mars is being conjoined by transiting Saturn. This combination is usually associated with frustration, blocked energy, and major life lessons. Since Saturn has been within the vicinity of Mars (most of 2011) Gillard has been going through a difficult period.

However Saturn and Mars are in mutual reception in Gillard’s horoscope which means that they are favourably disposed towards each other. So although the situation is very difficult for Gillard this Saturn-Mars aspect is not quite as bad as it appears.

In both Rudd and Gillard’s horoscopes progressed Venus is significant at the moment. In Gillard’s horoscope progressed Venus is about to conjoin natal Neptune, the planet of dreams and illusions. Although these two planets are aligned in her natal chart progressed aspects from Venus to Neptune nevertheless amplify deception and illusion regarding allies.

Although Pluto, the planet associated with hidden scenarios has been aspecting her natal Venus over the last year, suggesting that the plotters have been out to get her for some time, her natal Venus is conjunct Pluto showing that she is also familiar with back room power plays.

The next major planetary transit for Gillard is Jupiter’s trine to Venus on March 1^st 2012. Those who study astrology will recall that this is a transit commonly associated with popularity and success.

Without a confirmed birth time there is insufficient astrological evidence on which to make a definite call.

While we are missing some vital clues aspects from Uranus to Gillard’s Sun in the coming months suggest that an unstable time lies ahead of her, particularly in April and October 2012 and February 2013. Even is she wins Monday’s showdown, Gillard may still find herself on a different path within 12 months.

The horoscope for the showdown with Rudd at 10 am Monday 27^th February shows the planet of femininity, represented by the Moon, applying to a conjunction with Jupiter, the planet of luck and success. Although we can take nothing in isolation, this tiny of evidence suggests a win for Gillard.

Unfortunately without a confirmed time of birth it is impossible to reach a black and white conclusion.
