Horary: Will James buy the business

The traditional scheme of planetary rulerships has an internal integrity and beauty that has stood the test of time. In this system the 2 lights, the Sun and the Moon, rule one positive sign and one negative sign respectively, and the remaining 5 traditional planets, Saturn Jupiter Mars Venus and Mercury, each rule one positive and one negative sign.

Planetary rulerships Please note the the words positive and negative in this context are not value judgements in the modern sense. Positive here means outgoing/active and negative means inward/receptive. In terms of elemental qualities the positive signs are hot and the negative signs are cold.

When the practice adopted by some modern astrologers of assigning rulership of Scorpio to Pluto, Aquarius to Uranus and Pisces to Neptune is implemented, the traditional system is thrown into chaos and astrology loses effectiveness and precision. For those wishing to learn astrology this modern practice can be very confusing.

An example of the effectiveness of the traditional system is demonstrated in the horary question: Will James buy my business? The chart is shown below – click to enlarge.

Horary Business purchase JamesThe querent had been in long negotiations with James to purchase her importing business. She wanted to know whether the deal would go though. This question was answered by horary astrology, the astrology that is used to make accurate predictions.

In horary astrology the strongest confirmation of any deal or contract taking place is an applying aspect between the significators of the two parties.

In this instance the querent is represented by the ruler of the 1st house. The 1st house has Scorpio on the cusp. In traditional astrology Mars is the ruler of Scorpio. Pluto is not considered. Mars therefore represents the querent.

James, the potential purchaser, is represented the ruler of the 7th house which has Libra on the cusp. Venus rules Libra and therefore represents James.

In this chart Venus at 11.56 Libra applies by square to Mars at 12.18 Cancer. This indicates that the two parties come together and make a deal. James did in fact purchase the querent’s business.

Note that if Pluto had been used as the ruler of Scorpio there would have been no direct evidence of the two parties coming together. Pluto does not aspect Venus.

When ‘the first principles’ of astrology are kept intact astrology is a potent tool for analysis and precision. This is not to suggest that we should ignore the modern planets, but simply that they should not be used as sign rulers. When the modern planets are placed on an angle or conjoin a planet they cannot be ignored.

However I suggest that orbs be restricted to one or two degrees at the most. After all the concept of orbs is related to visibility with the naked eye.

Horary astrology provides an excellent foundation for the study of astrology. Many experienced astrologers have expressed surprise at the depth and meaning revealed by horary and traditional astrology.

The principles of horary can be extended to natal astrology. I can guarantee that you will never look at a chart the same way again.
