Predicting the Australian election

Using dignity & reception in chart analysis

In my June 28 article on my stock market direction site in which I predicted the election date I demonstrated the effectiveness of using the national ingress horoscope, set for the beginning of the astrological year, to reveal national developments.

2010 Ingress for Australia

The method I used to predict the election date was simple: The government is always represented by the tenth house and the opposition is always represented by the fourth house. In this case the sign on the cusp of the tenth house is Scorpio and its traditional ruler is Mars. The sign on the cusp of the fourth house is Taurus and its ruler is Venus.

Venus and Mars
Venus and Mars conjoined at 13 Libra on August 21. So this is the day when the two parties come together in battle. On that same day the Sun conjoined the 7th cusp. The cusps of houses 1, 10, 7 and 4 are considered to be power points by astrologers. I considered the conjunction of Venus and Mars and the Sun reaching the 7th house cusp sufficient evidence  to predict that the election would be held on August 21 2010.
In my brief comments before the August Victorian Astrology Association lecture I suggested that if the same logic was followed that was used to predict the election date, the government was in serious trouble.
The reasoning for this prediction is the ancient twin techniques of dignity and reception. On August 21 Venus and Mars are in Libra. Venus, the planet that rules the opposition

2010 Ingress for Australia with Venus-Mars conjunction

inAustralia’s ingress chart for 2010, rules the sign of Libra. Venus is in its essential dignity. It is in its essence.

Dignities
However Mars, the planet that rules the government in Australia’s 2010 ingress chart, is in its detriment in the sign of Libra. A planet in its detriment is damaged goods. Mars in Libra is disposited by Venus. It is really very simple: it is Venus, representing the opposition, who has the advantage.

The newspapers report that the government’s huge lead has been squandered by Gillard’s tactical error to go to the polls early. But how is the ‘hung parliament,’ where the ability to form a government is determined by the need for one of the major parties to form a partnership with independents, shown by astrology?

Receptions: Saturn square Pluto
Receptions are the answer. On the same day as Venus and Mars conjoined in Libra Saturn
Major Dignities

in Libra made a square aspect to Pluto in Capricorn.  In the sign of Libra Saturn is in its exaltation. Exaltation is considered to be a major dignity. Saturn in Libra reflects the ability to balance conflicting demands with poise and good judgement.

Pluto is one of the modern outer planets, and has no traditional rulership in ancient astrology, and therefore has no essential dignity in any of the signs. However in the sign of Capricorn it is in the sign in which Saturn is dignified. Pluto dignifies an exalted Saturn. It simplistic terms we would say that Pluto ‘loves’ Saturn, and therefore will do whatever it can to assist Saturn. And what is Saturn doing in Libra? It is performing a balancing act. The result: a hung parliament where partnership with independents is required in order to govern.
So on the day of the election we witnessed the conjunction of Venus and Mars in the sign of Libra giving the government a major shock and also an exact square between Saturn and Pluto, with receptions showing that Saturn is empowered to bring balance.
Internet search
If you trawl the internet for receptions you will find discussions relating to the ancient texts, the origins of receptions, and different points of view about the validity of receptions in certain circumstances. The terminology can be confusing and the discussions bewildering. Expressions such as “planets receiving each other”, “giving virtue”, and “providing a reception” are examples.
Simple formula
I strongly recommend that you stick to the basics and keep your language simple and clear, such as: Jupiter dignifies Venus, therefore it loves Venus; Mars is in the sign in which Saturn has its fall, therefore Mars hates whatever Saturn represents.  Simple statements such as these focus the mind upon what the chart is telling you.
In my Horary and Foundation Studies classes I provide students with a simple formula that brings clarity and precision to the understanding of receptions. The course syllabus is listed on my new site at www.astrologycoursesonline.com and lesson 10 covers the subject of receptions.
Customised lessons
The use of dignity and receptions in natal astrology adds new layers of meaning to the chart’s interpretation. I strongly urge those who have not covered this topic to investigate it further. I am happy to provide customised lessons to those who wish to add these basic techniques to their astrological toolkit. If you have any questions please feel welcome to contact me.

Prelude to a Market Downturn?

As we approach the new moon horoscope for the 10th August 2010 the markets are finely balanced with some commentators talking up the markets and many claiming that we are ‘walking on thin ice’. Contradictory signals abound. Some are predicting an immanent free fall, and others steady gains.

Venus and Mars

Lunations are often a signal for a change of market direction, at least in the short term. In this particular case Venus has just ingressed in Libra and aspected the 4 planets involved in the ‘cardinal square’: Jupiter Saturn Uranus and Pluto. Mars did the same at the beginning of August 2010 but was supported by positive receptions from the Sun Jupiter Uranus and Pluto. Any market prediction must include receptions.

Receptions

It is ironic that placid Venus in its dignity is more likely to cause trouble that aggressive Mars in its detriment – who would have thought! As outlined in my courses on Foundation Course, Financial Astrology (planetary transits) and Horary Astrology, receptions are very important when evaluating planetary aspects.

Conflicting indications reflected in the cosmos

The conflicting indications in the market place are reflected in the cosmos with 4 planets in the signs of their dignity or exaltation (Sun, Mercury, Venus and Saturn) and 4 outer planets travelling in retrograde motion: Jupiter Uranus Neptune and Pluto. The old astrological maxim applies: ‘As above, so below’.

Many astrological commentators have been predicting dire times as the cardinal climax, which is the very stressful alignment of all the outer planets except for Neptune, aligns more closely. Such an alignment has not been seen since the days of the Great Depression.

So does this mean another depression? It is difficult to be certain because while planetary pictures do correlate with world events these events may not affect the markets in the way that we anticipate. And of course different markets behave in different ways.

Comparisons with the Great Depression

The major obstacle that astrologers face in making a prediction for the markets and future world events is that no two planetary pictures are ever exactly the same. So while important astrological correlations can be made between present times and past times where a collapse was preceded by market highs, there cannot be a 100% certainty that the past will be repeated in the same way.

While we do know that a number of significant patterns are very similar, these patterns are operating in a different context. The modern era is very different to the 1930’s, and this contextual difference is reflected in the current astrological picture.

72% correlation

However the coming Jupiter-Saturn opposition on August 16 does have a 72% correlation with an economic downturn since 1840. While this correlation does not guarantee that we will experience another economic downturn over the next 12 months, it is occurring at the same time as the so-called ‘cardinal crisis’ mentioned above, which echoes planetary patterns in the 1930s. In the 1930’s both patterns occurred together and all these outer planets were in cardinal signs

The other important similarity with the Great Depression Era is the fact that Uranus is again in the sign of Aries. And of course it is a tight aspect with Saturn and Pluto. There the similarity ends, for while there is a tight aspect between Saturn Uranus and Pluto, with Jupiter also opposing Saturn, all in cardinal signs, all the planets have swapped signs except for Uranus.

On that occasion Pluto, the bedrock planet, was in Cancer, opposite it present placement in Capricorn. Cancer has a strong association with home and family whereas Capricorn has an association with big business. Uranus in aspect to Pluto and the other outer planets adds a strong dose of unpredictability.

So while the stock market is range trading, stay alert!

The USA 2010 Ingress & the Deepwater Oil Rig Disaster

The Importance of the Moon in Ingress Charts

Since ancient times the ingress of the Sun into the cardinal sign of Aries has been used to plot the destiny of nations. The interpretation applied to the beginning of the Sun’s annual journey must be set against the backdrop of the larger cycles if its meaning is to be fully understood.

The ingress chart for the Sun

The ingress chart for the Sun is a derivative chart in the sense that it draws its substance from the potential shown in the birth chart of the nation. It is a lens through which we can see how planetary potential shown in the original birth horoscope is focused for the current year, and the issues around which our consciousness (the Sun) are focused.

The awesome power and majesty of the Sun has for millennia been considered the physical manifestation of divinity, the prime mover of our universe. The Moon is the beloved partner of the Sun and the fastest of the moving cosmic bodies which astrologers call ‘planets’. In her monthly cycle, as she fills and empties herself of the Sun’s energy, she transmits the divine light to the other planets.

The Moon in the ingress chart

The position of the Moon in the ingress chart is a still frame snapshot capturing the image of the Moon’s transmission of energy from one planet to another. This transmission of light symbolises the ebb and flow of energy and emotions within the collective, and the planets or fixed stars involved in the energy transfer have special significance for the year ahead.

In this short analysis I use a blend of ancient and modern techniques to demonstrate the value of ingress charts and in particular the importance of the Moon as representative of the flow of events. The event that I wish to highlight is the April 20 Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion which has resulted in an unprecedented ecological disaster of tragic proportions.

Although limited space here only allows me to tease out a few threads from the rich tapestry of meaning inherent in the complex interplay of planet energies from original birth chart of the United States and its derivative 2010 ingress horoscope, the significance of the Moon is very apparent.

Backdrop: Important 2010 transits to the horoscope of the USA

Transits to the USA Chart from the Deepwater Oil Rig Explosion

The chart I favour for the USA is the 5.10 pm Sibley chart for July 4 1776 in Philadelphia. Transits of the modern outer planets to this horoscope have correlated with important events. For example Pluto crossing the ascendant with 9/11, Neptune conjoining the Moon with the Deepwater Horizon oil leak tragedy,  Uranus opposite Mars and Saturn conjunct Uranus at the Challenger Space Shuttle explosion. NSW astrologer and regular FAA Journal ‘Eye in the Sky’ columnist Ed Tamplin has also pointed out that the entry of the USA into World War 2 correlated with progressed Mars conjoining the Midheaven and transiting Uranus on the Midheaven.

At the time of the Deepwater Horizon explosion:

1. Saturn is very close to the Midheaven.
2. Pluto, the planet representing crisis, death and rebirth, opposes Venus, the ruler of the tenth house, the national executive.
3. Neptune, the planet representing oil, conjoins the US Moon.
4. Uranus, the planet which represents sudden shocks, conjoins the fourth house cusp (the IC), along with Jupiter. The IC represents the land, the American homeland.

Together these 4 transits represent a time of challenge for the American people.

Significant features of the 2010 USA ingress horoscope include the following:

USA 2010 Ingress of the Sun

The horoscope for the ingress of the Sun in 2010, shown on the left, has 21.13 Cancer rising with the Moon at 26.13 Taurus. Aspect arrows show the application of one planet to another.

1. Moon conjoins Algol, long regarded as the most malefic of the fixed stars, with a particular association with death and disaster.
Moon, significator of events, The Moon carries the energy of Algol and applies to first to Uranus and then to Neptune, the planet which signifies oil.
2. The Sun trines Mars, the planet representing explosions. The Sun and Mars are in mutual reception, which facilitates their energy transfer. The Sun conjoins the Midheaven which gives it extra power. In horary astrology planets conjoining the angles are regarded as having ‘accidental dignity’. Accidental dignity is covered in my distance education  Horary Astrology and Foundation Studies courses.  Mars is in the first house, emphasizing its importance and relevance.
3. The Sun next opposes Saturn, seen as ‘the greater malefic’ in traditional astrology, and is also associated with disasters. Although Saturn is in the sign of its exaltation it is retrograde. A planet in retrograde motion is like a person walking backwards, likely to have an accident. Saturn is very angular on the IC and thus has extra power to cause problems.
4. Venus in this chart rules the fourth house, which is the American homeland. Venus is not on its best behaviour in the sign of its detriment and acts more like a malefic.
Venus is in antiscia opposition to Jupiter. Antiscia aspects are like shadows and suggest a hidden relationship. However the opposition is like a normal planetary opposition in that it represents two forces opposing each other. The opposition of Venus to Jupiter exacerbates negative tendencies.
While Jupiter has positive dignity in Pisces, one very old interpretation for this sign placement is flooding. Pisces is associated with the sea. The sea near the homeland is flooded with oil. Jupiter’s ninth house placement suggests foreign involvement (BP).

Although the horoscope the chart for the Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig explosion is replete with meaning I do not have the time to provide an analysis here. Obvious starting points for discussion include the background context provided by the Saturn-Uranus opposition, the Sun’s trine to Pluto and the Sun’s antiscia opposition to Neptune, the Moon’s transfer of light from Jupiter to Venus and aspects involving Mars.

Transits from the Oil Rig Explosion chart

Lunar connections between the 2010 USA ingress chart and the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion chart:

USA 2010 ingress chart with Deepwater oil rig explosion planets

1. Moon in the Oil Rig The Explosion Chart conjoins the Ascendant in the 2010 ingress chart, within one degree. The Moon has transferred the light of Algol to the Ascendant. The Ascendant in an ingress chart represents the country – the USA is faced with a disaster.

2. Venus conjoins the Moon in the ingress chart. As we have seen Venus in the ingress chart represents the American homeland and the Moon in the ingress chart applies to Neptune, the planet which represents oil.

3. The lunar eclipse of June 26 2010 squares the Midheaven/IC axis of the ingress chart, and also conjoins Pluto in a T-square to this axis, aligning also with the Sun and Saturn.

4. The solar eclipse of July 11 2010 falls directly upon the Ascendant of the ingress chart. It is interesting to note that it also makes an antiscia conjunction with Uranus and the Descendant in the US Sibley chart.

5. The Moon’s South Node conjoins the Ascendant of the USA 2010 ingress horoscope. In traditional astrology the South Node is associated with loss.

Although not a lunar connection, we can add to this list the Sun in the Oil Rig Explosion Chart which makes a partile square the Mars in the ingress chart, thus energizing the explosive and destructive potential of Mars.

The importance of the Moon as representative of the flow of events

In the above list of the lunar connections between oil rig explosion chart to the 2010 USA Sibley ingress chart the importance of the Moon in its representation of the flow of events is critical.

1. Moon in the ingress horoscope is conjunct Algol.

2. Moon in the 2010 chart applies directly to Uranus thus transiting Algol’s energy to Uranus.

3. Moon then applies to Neptune, the planet which represents oil.

4. The first pass of the Moon across the 2010 ingress Ascendant, one month after the ingress date, coincides with the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion.

5. June 26 lunar eclipse conjoins Pluto and squares the Midheaven/IC.

6. The July 11 solar eclipse falls exactly on the 2010 USA ingress Ascendant.

In the above analysis I have taken a minimalist approach using only lunar aspects between the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion and the 2010 ingress horoscope for the USA. There are many more layers of meaning that could be included. However this list is sufficient to demonstrate the importance of the Moon in ingress charts in showing the flow of events for the following year.

It is of course impossible to interpret an ingress chart in isolation and without reference to the foundation birth chart. Neither can the larger perspective of long term planetary cycles be ignored.

Conclusion

Even when only the lunar aspects and associations are used there is enough to explain the relevance and importance of the Moon as representative of the flow of events.

I believe that if we are wise enough to embrace the wisdom of our astrological predecessors and incorporate this wisdom into our modern understanding then our skills will be enhanced.

Julia Gillard now Australia’s PM

On June 24 2010, 2 days before the lunar eclipse at 4 Capricorn, Julia Gillard was sworn in as Australia’s first female Prime Minister.

Julia Gillard sworn in as Prime Minister

Just as a horoscope is drawn up for the moment a person is born, so a horoscope can be drawn up for an event or the beginning of a Prime Minister’s reign. As Australia’s first female PM this particular horoscope has special significance.
As always we first look at the power points of a horoscope, which are the angles: the Ascendant and the Midheaven. The Ascendant in this horoscope is at 25.60 Libra, which is 2 degrees from the fixed star Spica. One of the foremost authorities on the fixed stars, Vivian Robson, on page. 211 of The Fixed Stars and their Constellations in Astrology, says that if Spica is rising it shows “…unbounded good fortune, happiness, ecclesiastical preferment, unexpected honour or advancement beyond native’s hopes or capacity.” This is an excellent omen for Julia Gillard in her role as Australia’s first woman Prime Minister.
The Midheaven of this horoscope is 15 Cancer, at which point the fixed star Canopus is culminating. Robson on page 150 says of Canopus when it is culminating that it promises “Great glory, fame and wealth, dignity and authority by the help of an old clergy man or influential person.” This is another very auspicious indicator.

Grand trine for Julia Gillard's appointment as PM

The Ascendant itself is the focus of a grand trine. A grand trine is formed when 3 separate planets or significant points in a horoscope are united by a trine aspect, which is 120 degrees. This is considered to be a favourable planetary pattern by modern astrologers. Traditional astrologers would only view it as a favourable pattern if the planets involved are in positive dignity and reception. Mercury in Gemini is certainly in its dignity. It is the natural ruler of communication and reason. The other planet is Neptune, which has no traditional rulership over any of the zodiac signs. Mercury aspecting Neptune is often associated with persuasion, skilful communication, and sometimes with deception. With both these planets aspecting the Ascendant it appears as though Julia Gillard’s reign as PM will be characterised by her persuasive communication and ability to sell her message.
The other important feature of this horoscope is the T-square formed between the Sun, Pluto, and the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction. This planetary pattern is associated with great tension. The Sun opposite Pluto is an indicator of power. The Sun represents the leader, who in this case is Julia Gillard. The opposition to Pluto shows that she is likely to be involved in intense power plays, with the goal of transformation and regeneration. The square of these planets to the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction highlights the underlying tension representing the need for reform and change.
In the background, shown by the red dotted line in the diagram of the horoscope, is the antiscia opposition of Jupiter/Uranus and Saturn. Saturn has been going through a series of oppositions with these planets for some time. Saturn’s opposition with Uranus began on the day Obama was elected, and indicates social and political change, reform and revolution, with a strong right wing emphasis. Saturn’s opposition with Jupiter is associated with economic downturns, and occurs every 20 years. It is against this backdrop that Julia Gillard takes office.
The Ascendant ruler is often considered to be the most significant planet. In this case it is Venus placed in the eleventh house of hopes and wishes. The eleventh house supports the tenth house, just as the second house supports the first house. The eleventh house represents the resources of the government. Venus is considered to be a ‘benefic’, which is usually considered to be very positive, except in this case Venus has no dignity, a condition which is called ‘peregrine‘.
So Julia Gillard’s government has support, although this should not be over-rated. Venus receives a trine aspect from the Moon, which is translating the light of Mars. Mars rules the second house of finances, so one of Julia Gillard’s primary concerns will be to put the country’s financial affairs in order. It also rules open enemies and those with whom we negotiate. As Mars is also the natural ruler of war Julia Gillard may also have to consider whether to bring the troops home.

Julia Gillard natal horoscope

And what about Julia Gillard’s horoscope? Unfortunately we don’t know her time of birth, although she was born in Wales. Her Sun is in Libra, the sign associated with diplomacy and the ability to anticipate the needs and actions of others. The Sun in Libra is in its detriment, and often shows a denial of one’s own needs in order to please others.
Her Moon is in Gemini, showing a quick and able mind. Because her time of birth is unknown, the exact position of the Moon is also unknown, and it is therefore difficult to speculate on its aspects to other planets.
Mercury, which represents her mind, is in Scorpio, showing strong intuition and deep penetrating insight, coupled with the ability for intense research.
Venus, the planet of relationships, conjoins Pluto, showing an intense nature, and the probability that she will experience significant power plays in her life. She is likely to relish ‘the cut and thrust‘ of politics. Mars, the planet of action, is also diminished in the sign of Libra, but makes a close aspect to Uranus, showing that Julia Gillard is likely to take action quickly and surprise others.
Her horoscope also shows a conjunction of the 2 planets most connected with economic matters, Jupiter and Saturn, both in the sign of Capricorn. Jupiter is weak in this sign but is dominated by a powerful Saturn which rules this sign. This is a woman with political judgement and pragmatism.
The above comments are only a light exploration of Julia Gillard’s horoscope. An accurate time of birth would enable a deeper and fuller interpretation

Relationships, dignity & reception

One of the major benefits of studying horary astrology is the understanding it brings to ‘first principles’. Included among these first principles are the concepts of dignity and reception.

The assessment of essential dignities underpins many judgements in horary astrology, and is invaluable in natal astrology. Unfortunately essential dignities are often overlooked by many modern astrologers. However when the essential dignities are applied to the assessment of relationships in the natal chart our understanding of the relationship dynamics is deepened. This is especially true when the receptions between planets are included in the assessment of relationships.

Aries Ingress for Australia update

In  my post on March 13 for the Aries ingress in Australia, under the sub-heading of Neptune’s Fury I mentioned the possibility of flooding.

Wikipaedia reported: “The 2010 Western Australian storms were a series of storms that travelled over south-western Western Australia on 21 and 22 March 2010. One of the more intense storm cells passed directly over the capital city of Perth between 3:30pm and 5:00pm on Monday 22 March 2010.
The storms brought extensive hail, strong winds and heavy rain, causing extensive damage to vehicles, property and trees, and flash flooding, as well as the first significant rainfall in Perth since 20 November 2009. The hail stones, believed to be the largest ever to have occurred in Perth, were around 3 cm (1.2 in) – 6 cm (2.4 in) in diameter,[2] which caused extensive damage to property across the city, including schools, hospitals, universities and power infrastructure. Wind gusts were recorded at around 120 km/h (75 mph).  At the peak, around 158,000 homes in Perth, Mandurah and Bunbury lost electric power. Telephone lines were cut to thousands of homes until the next day, and the storms led to an estimated AU$200 million worth of insurance claims within three days, with $70 million within the first 24 hours.  It was identified as the most expensive natural disaster in Western Australia’s history, and was declared a natural disaster by the Premier, Colin Barnett, allowing federal and state funds to be appropriated for disaster relief.
The storm brought an end to a lengthy dry spell in Perth…
.”

On March 22, 2010 The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for heavy rain and flooding in many parts of central Queensland.
In March 2010 an inland sea formed in central Australia after flooding of the main river systems. This extraordinary event is a rare occurrence. Lake Eyre, which has only completely filled three times in recorded white history – the last time occurred in 1974-75, was also filled.
